Animal Craft: Styro Cup Donkey | Home Learning Art & Craft Project Activity

In this post, I will be sharing a "donkey" craft. This was a craft project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 3: Sound of the Week) homeschool curriculum for the "ey" sound as in "donkey", Click Here To Find Out Why We Are Doing HomeschoolingWe have so many extra styro cups, so I thought about creating our donkey using this material.

READY FOR KID BEFORE STARTING ACTIVITY ALONG WITH OTHER MATERIALS

* cut one styro cup (for the head)

* cut  ears and arms patterns

* cut mouth and tummy spot patterns

DONE BY ADULT OR PARENT

NOTE: This craft is a collaboration between parent or caregiver and child and is suitable for kids about 7 and above, you may adapt the process to the skill or ability of the child.

DONKEY HEAD: Take one styro cup and cut it just enough to make it a bit shorter than the other styro cup used as the donkey's body.

DONKEY ARMS: Take the spare pieces of the cut styro cup earlier or a board paper (cardstock, vellum board or specialty board) with same color as what your child will paint their donkey (example: gray, black or brown) and draw donkey arm patterns on it.

DONKEY EARS: Take a another spare piece of a cut styro cup or a board paper
(cardstock, vellum board or specialty board) with same color as what your child will paint their donkey (example: gray, black or brown) and draw some ear patterns on it. Draw an inner ear in the middle of each styro cup ear patterns using a pencil or create separate inner ear patterns on a pink or peach colored construction paper to be glued on the ears later.

DONKEY MOUTH AND TUMMY SPOT: Take a bond paper, trace round patterns on it (bigger and another smaller one) using round objects. Next measure the tip of the smaller circle pattern on styro cup head around the mouth area and the tip of the bigger circle on the styro cup body around the tummy area, draw a line using a ruler on each part of the circles that will be cut off.

 DONE BY CHILD

* cut ears and arms patterns

* cut mouth and tummy spot patterns

* paint donkey pieces

* glue donkey pieces together

* draw details on donkey

STEPS IN DOING THIS DONKEY CRAFT

STEP #1: Let child paint styro cup head, body, ears, and arms pattern with color of their choice. Skip painting process for ears and arms if you use a colored board paper (cardstock, vellum board or specialty board) for it. Make sure to color the ear shadow patterns that was drawn with pencil in the middle of styro cup ear patterns with a different shade or color than the rest of the ears using coloring marker. Set painted pieces aside.

STEP #2: Once painted pieces are dry, let child spread white glue on the insides of the styro cup head and glue it on top of the styro cup body.

STEP #3: Next, let child draw hooves on the arms, a nostril and mouth on the mouth spot pattern using coloring markers. Next, let child glue googly eyes and mouth spot on paper cup head using white glue. You may get creative with the eyes and use colored and fun looking googly eyes.

STEP #4: Next, let child glue ears on top side of styro cup head using hot melt glue. Put hot glue on the spot and let child glue ears on it. Then cut strands of yarns for the donkey mane. Let child glue yarns in the middle of donkey ears using white glue.

STEP #5: Finally, let child glue tummy spot pattern below styro cup body to complete the donkey. And there goes your "styro cup donkey", below is Lauren's version of doing this craft. Get the kids creating their own version of this donkey craft today!
