This is my first time to really celebrate a dog's birthday, we have several dogs in the past but we really didn't take the time to do something or celebrate their birthdays. This time I thought about trying and doing something for our little shih tzu dog as he turns one-year-old, I made a simple cake with blue icing and a DIY shih tzu character topper on it, I also got a little gift for him, just some extra things that he really needs and that he can use later.

Next year, we'll do it again and get it a little better as I learn more things about celebrating a dog or pet's birthday. Below is how I created a simple but fun and colorful birthday for our dog, all I have are some balloons, a cake, a gift, some accessories to make our dog look special and elegant on his day. ABOUT OUR SHIH TZU
A little story about our shih tzu dog, his name is "Lakey" and he is one of 6 puppies born to his 2-year-old shih tzu mother in August 19, 2020. His mother is named "Yassie" and she is the shih tzu pet of my sister. My sister planned to sell the puppies but sadly all 5 puppies died and only Lakey survived so my sister decided to give the last surviving puppy to us at 2 months old. Lakey is a lively and adorable tricolor shih tzu dog with innocent dark brown eyes.
DIY CAKE TOPPERS (SHIH TZU CHARACTER & MORE) + LINKS TO FREE PRINTABLES: NUMBER TEMPLATES & PATTERN PAPERS!
I decided to simply use the color blue as the theme color for this DIY. I created a shih tzu dog character to be used as a cake topper using the body of a rabbit template and just draw the patterns for the head, arms and tail part, I tailored it to look like our shih tzu. I had the character hold a happy birthday message, this is one of those extra birthday gift tags (as seen in the image below) I printed last year for Lauren's birthday. It's the type of tag that you would tie or hang to a gift bag so I cut the extra part to make it a simple rectangle shape. I added decorative borders around it using a craft scissor.
You may also simply use any dog or cat cartoon as cake topper for your pet's birthday, easily create one by checking out these dog and cat templates below. These are actually craft templates but you can turn them into cute cake toppers for a pet's birthday or even an animal theme birthday, print them on a heavy weight paper (such as vellum board, card stock or any paper of similar texture) and just add a stick at the back. Choose from any of the available templates to create a cake topper with by checking out the links below.
I printed the "dog template" from "simple mom project" as sample dog cake topper (as seen below), I made some alterations on how the arms should be glued and made the dog hold a "happy birthday" message using these FREE Printable Round Birthday Gift Tags Here, I glue it to a pink construction paper and cut all around the edges adding a pink border to the plain white circle. I also added extra embellishments on the dog such as bows, you may add some if the topper is for a girl pet.
For a sample cat topper, I printed the "cat template" by "mrs. merry" (as seen below). You may follow the following settings in printing this template as cake topper, choose the "colored ; A4" version and custom scale the template at "70" to make it the right size as topper for a small 2-3 layer cake. You may scale your chosen templates to the size that will fit your cake before printing them.
DIY DOG CAKE + LINK TO CAKE WITH FROSTING RECIPE
I wasn't aware that there is a cake for dogs that is okay for them to eat on their birthday, as I have known recently there are some stores who makes and sells these things for dogs but I'm not sure if there is any around my area but you can also make your own dog cake with recipes found online or you can simply purchase "cake mix with frosting for dogs" so you can truly be sure that the ingredients are better suited and especially formulated for dogs. So I was able to make a regular chocolate cake for Lakey to honor the day of his birth but next year I will try to do a dog cake for him that he can enjoy himself personally.
You can make a cake that you can enjoy as well separate from the cake especially for your dog or pet. I made a chocolate cake, this is the cake that didn't have eggs, butter or milk in them since I've ran out of those things when I made the cake,

Fluffy White Frosting for Lakey's cake and tint it using a liquid blue food coloring.
EASY DIY CAKE BOARD + WHERE TO BUY CHEAP BUT ELEGANT DOG BOW TIE ONLINE & BALLOON IDEAS
I fill the cake I made with "Clara Olé Blueberry Jam", I was looking for the strawberry jam but it ran out of stock so I used the blueberry jam instead. I think chocolate and blueberry jam was a good combination as well, you can try using some jams or jellies as a cake filling for this chocolate cake recipe. I made a square cake board for the cake using cardboard from an empty box and covered it with aluminum foil, you can also use foil papers in other colors you have or like.
I blow up some balloons for Lakey, good thing I had an extra blue "happy birthday" printed balloon that I kept from Lauren's birthday 2 years ago and a blue balloon with a heart print in it from an assorted rainbow color valentine balloons I bought last year. Lakey wore a blue bow tie around his neck, I bought 2 colors (blue and black) from online. It's an adjustable bow tie for cats and dogs but it was a bit loose for a small breed dog like him so I just tie it in a knot at the back, Click Here To Check Out Adjustable Strap Pet Cat & Dog Bow Ties. It also comes in many other different colors for your cats and dogs (especially medium sized dogs), a cheap but elegant collar for special events or occasions with your pet.

Print FREE printables for home DIYs and more! I'm using "HP Ink Tank 115" single function inkjet printer in printing the sample templates in this DIY, I bought it online at shopee.ph. It is a quality and low-cost printer for home printing that uses tank for the ink. It needs a total of 4 ink bottles (CMYK) to refill the tank, you can save even more by refilling with universal ink. Just make sure the ink is compatible with the printer model before deciding on a purchase.
