In this post, I will be sharing an animal puppet craft we did. This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) home school curriculum for the short "a" sound as in "animal".

CHOOSING OUR PAPER BAG PUPPETS + BENEFITS OF THIS PAPER BAG PUPPET ACTIVITY
I did a search for ideas on how to make an animal puppet and found this "Paper Bag Crafts" from DLTK Site for Kids. This site features several kinds of animals as well as other characters (such as clown, scarecrow, vampire, princess, etc.) that your kids can do a paper bag puppet with.
Lauren did a "Lion" & "Giraffe" puppet as you can see in the image above. This puppet craft is great for kids of all ages, it helps promote fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and fine motor planning skills such as coloring (if you choose the black & white template), cutting and gluing especially for younger children. Aside from that playing with the puppets afterwards can help promote language skills, social awareness, creativity and more!
DIY ALTERNATIVE PAPER BAG BODY FOR YOUR PUPPETS
We didn't have any of those store bought paper bags when we had to create this puppet craft so I just thought about doing it ourselves. I found this video tutorial on YouTube called "How to Make a Paper Bag Puppet" and this is where we got the method to create the bags for our puppets.
Printable Large Favor Bag Template
Aside from this method, you can also try using printable paper bags, check out this FREE Printable Large Blank Favor Bag template. Print template on a construction paper with similar color of your chosen animal puppet pieces and just create a big fold at the bottom of the finished bag to create the flap where to add or glue your puppet's face or head details. Below is a sample "dog puppet" using the "printable large favor bag template" as body.

A VARIETY OF OPTIONS AND PUPPET TEMPLATES TO CHOOSE FROM
DLTK "Paper Bag Crafts" have templates for the parts of the animals or characters you want to make in black & white (templates that your kids can color themselves) and colored (templates that are ready to cut and glue). I printed the colored templates of Lauren's chosen animals. With the available template options in creating this version of animal paper bag puppet you can have a variety of animals to choose from and the kids can also have the option to color it themselves and get creative with the look and colors of their animals.
HAVE FUN WITH THE PUPPETS!
We were excited for the outcome of our puppets, we tried putting them in our hands and they're really nice puppets to play with. It can be use in telling an animal story to your child or for staging an animal puppet show for your child or children. Lauren as well as her cousins had fun with it, they love it and think it's an adorable puppet. It's also fun and easy to put together. Try creating one with the kids today!

GET A LOW-COST QUALITY PRINTER FOR HOME PRINTING!
Print FREE printables for home DIYs and more! I'm using "HP Ink Tank 115" single function inkjet printer in printing templates and printables, I bought it online at shopee.ph. It is a quality and low-cost printer for home printing that uses tank for the ink.
It needs a total of 4 ink bottles (CMYK) to refill the tank, you can save even more by refilling with universal ink. Just make sure the ink is compatible with the printer model before deciding on a purchase.
