Summer Craft | Food Craft: Ice Cream In A Cone Out Of Foam Ball & Styro Cup | Home Learning Art & Craft Project Activity

In this post, I will be sharing an "ice cream" craft. We had foam balls for the scoops of ice cream, styro cups for the cones, a mixture of powder paint for the syrup and construction papers for the sprinkles on top. This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) homeschool curriculum for the long "i" sound as in "ice cream".

READY FOR KID BEFORE STARTING ACTIVITY ALONG WITH OTHER MATERIALS

* foam balls (with dried textured paste)

* cut styro cups (for cones)

* punched or bits of construction papers (for sprinkles)

DONE BY ADULT OR PARENT

NOTE: This craft is a collaboration between parent or caregiver and child and is suitable for kids about 6 and above, you may adapt the process to the skill or ability of the child. You may not finish the project all at once in a day if you can't but you can work on it day by day or in a series of days until you can finish the whole project.

ICE CREAM SCOOP(S)We want our ice cream to have that scoop look and effect to it. To capture that, make your own texture paste to put all over the ball(s) before painting them. HOW TO MAKE TEXTURED PASTE: Mix white paintliquid glue and baby or talcum powder together. Apply the resulting paste all over the balls then place balls under the heat of the sun for the paste mixture to totally harden and dry.

* ICE CREAM CONE(S): Take an 8 oz. size disposable styro cup and cut up to the middle making sure the balls can sit through into it like a scoop of ice cream placed onto a cone.

PAPER SPRINKLES: Take different colors of construction papers and using a hole puncher punch paper to create small dots or you may try other shapes such as stars or hearts using a shape puncher. You may also choose to cut tiny bits of construction papers resembling vermicelli sprinkles for your foam ball ice creams.

DONE BY CHILD

* paint ice cream scoop(s)

* paint create details on styro cup cone(s)

* glue ice cream pieces together

* decorate ice cream

STEPS IN DOING THIS ICE CREAM CRAFT

STEP #1: Let child paint textured foam balls with any color of their choice.

STEP #2: Next, mix paints and create a shade resembling the color of an actual ice cream cone. Let child paint cone cup.

STEP #3: After painting cup, mix paint with a darker shade than the cup. Let child create cone details of their choice (you may take a look at ice cream cone pictures for ideas) using a very small or tiny paint brush. Set aside painted pieces (foam balls and cups) to dry under the heat of the sun or in front of an electric fan.

STEP #4: Once painted pieces are dry, let child glue foam ball on top of paper cup using liquid glue.

STEP #5: Next, create a mixture of paint syrup using powder paints in any color of choice, you may allow the child to choose any color they like. Add enough water to the powder paints, make sure the mixture is not too thin or thick but just enough that resembles consistency of actual syrup. If you can't find any powder paints in stores near you, you can also create your own by simply using sidewalk colored chalk, Click Here For The DIY Powdered Paint Recipe. Let child pour syrup paint onto the ice cream scoops.

STEP #6: Finally, let child add paper sprinkles on top of ice cream syrup.

And there goes your "ICE CREAM IN CONES". Kid's can have fun using it for pretend play or even adults can get creative with their own as decoration props for an "ice cream" themed party.
