Ocean Craft: Ocean Life Diorama | Home Learning Art & Craft Project Activity

This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) homeschool curriculum for the long "o" sound as in "ocean", Click Here To Find Out Why We Are Doing Homeschooling. I found this "Coral Reef Habitat Diorama" craft, I've seen many other versions of creating ocean dioramas but I chose this version because of convenience of the whole process. I think it's a very nice craft and we've never done anything like it, we call this project "Ocean Life Diorama".

CREATING AN OCEAN DIORAMA WITH FREE TEMPLATES

This "Coral Reef Habitat Diorama" craft both have colored and black and white templates of different sea creatures, fishes and corals. I chose the black and white templates so Lauren can color the creatures and corals herself. You can also choose the colored ones if you want to skip the coloring and immediately cut the templates to decorate your box.

Lauren used glitter pens and crayons to color the template. Next, Lauren cut out the sea creatures and corals herself. I covered the shoe box we used with dark blue cartolina paper. You will need sand for sandy ocean bottom effect in your diorama. If you don't have or can't find any sand around you, it's a good idea to buy colored sand that is used for crafts or mini foam beads. You can also create your own mini foam beads by cutting a styro bowl into very tiny pieces.

DIY FOAM BEADS AS ALTERNATIVE BOTTOM SAND FOR OCEAN DIORAMA

I cut out a styro bowl into very thin strips, then cut the strips into very tiny pieces resembling mini foam ball beads. To create colored bits, it's a good idea to dip the tiny bits of foam that you cut into a paint mixture that is the color of sand or any color you want and let it dry then you can use it as alternative sand for bottom of your ocean or coral reef diorama.

I spread glue all around bottom of the covered shoe box which is the ocean floor of our diorama and Lauren sprinkled the tiny foam bits on it to create a sandy bottom effect and finish the whole project. This version of doing an ocean diorama is definitely an easy and fun one for kids, it is a great activity to work on fine motor skills. Try making one today, check out the link "Coral Reef Habitat Diorama" for the templates, full tutorial and list of supplies needed.
