This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) homeschool curriculum for the "y" sound as in "yarn". This art we made is from a "Huichol Yarn Painting" blog post, the technique they used was inspired by Huichol (pronounced Wee-chol) art.

There's no instruction from the original post how it's done but I just looked at the sample pictures from the page for my daughter Lauren to try do the activity herself (above is the picture of Lauren's finished yarn art project). Check out the step by step process below on how we come up with our version of this painting using yarn.
CREATE YOUR OWN EASY YARN PAINTING
NOTE: This craft is a collaboration between parent or caregiver and child and is suitable for kids about 7 and above, you may adapt the process to the skill or ability of the child.
I searched for some "flowers in a pot" color page and printed it on a construction paper. Choose a simple but big picture that the child can easily cover up with yarns or the child can just draw the picture if you don't have a printer. You may try other subjects to use for your yarn art aside from what is shown.
Lauren colored the "flowers in a pot" color page with oil pastel colors or you may use crayons. Your child may color a picture or drawing first or they can immediately proceed in covering it with yarns. Coloring the page and drawing can be used as a guide for the color of yarns that will be glued on that part of the picture. Cut strands of yarns, spread glue on the spot and let child cover the area with the yarns.
Be sure to prepare a piece of towel and small cup with water in it on the side while doing this activity. Soak fingers in water once in a while then dry with towel to take off dry liquid glue residue and easily handle the strands of yarns which tends to get sticky as you go on in covering your whole picture.
FREE COLORING PAGES FOR YOUR YARN PAINTING ACTIVITY!
Check out the links below for some simple coloring pages you can use to try create your own yarn painting with your kids. Just choose any subject you like to use and print on construction paper. These pictures are simple and you may draw any additional details you like before covering with yarns or add the details using yarns to make your own unique outcome or yarn painting of the picture!
Above is a another yarn painting sample I created using the "printable girl coloring page", I draw additional ribbons on the sides of the girl's pigtails, you can cover the whole face with yarns and later just add the eyes and extra round blush on the girl's cheeks by gluing them on top of the covered face.
A VERY EASY ACTIVITY WITH SIMPLE MATERIALS & GREAT BENEFITS
It is really that simple to do this art activity with your kid(s), you only need construction papers, pencil (if you wish to let your child draw picture to be covered or add any additional details on a simple coloring page), crayons (if you wish to color picture as color guide for yarn), liquid glue, scissors, and yarns to create this project. Aside from sparking kid's imagination to create paintings using yarn, gluing on the strands one by one helps kids with patience and focus.
Try creating one with any subject of choice, could be an animal, insect or a house maybe? the outcome truly is a nice piece of art made out of yarns. I covered Lauren's finished picture with plastic cover and hang it on the wall in our room as a decoration. If you're looking for a letter "Y" art project or a yarn activity to do with kids, why not try creating some beautiful painting using yarns?
