In this post, I will be sharing an easy "bluebell flower" craft using egg cartons and drinking straws. This was a craft project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 3: Sound of the Week) home school curriculum for the "ue" sound as in "blue".

Lauren is going to make something "blue", I thought about blue colored stuff and chose "bluebell flowers". We have a lot of these egg cartons around the house, just perfect to use in creating some egg carton flower craft.
READY FOR KID BEFORE STARTING ACTIVITY ALONG WITH OTHER MATERIALS
* cut egg cartons with edges shaped like a bluebell flower petal
* yellow paper drinking straw(s) cut into short pieces and edges cut in fringe.
* cut leaf patterns
DONE BY ADULT OR PARENT
* BLUEBELL FLOWERS: Cut the egg cartons and shaped the edges resembling a bluebell petal.
Real Bluebell Flowers * BLUEBELL STEM & STAMEN: We only had these white plastic drinking straws when Lauren made this craft, I inserted steel wires into the straws to make them sturdy and hold up the egg carton flowers. I also cut fringe on the tip of each straw to make it a stem and stamen in one. For convenience, you may use green paper drinking straws for the stem and yellow paper drinking straws for the stamen. Cut the yellow paper straws into short pieces then cut it in fringe to create a separate stamen for your flowers.
* Bluebell Leaves: Draw some leaf patterns resembling the leaves of an actual bluebell flower on a green construction paper.
DONE BY CHILD
* paint egg cartons
* cut | draw details on the leaves
* glue bluebell flower parts together.
STEPS IN DOING THIS BLUEBELL FLOWER CRAFT
STEP #1: Let child paint the egg cartons with blue paint, they can try any shades of blue aside from what is shown. Set the painted egg cartons aside and let it dry for a couple of minutes.
STEP #2: Once the egg cartons are dry, using hot glue (with supervision) let child glue the yellow paper straw on top in the middle of the egg carton to create the stamen and the green paper straw below the egg carton to create the stem. Put hot glue on the spot and guide child to glue straws on it.
STEP #3: Next, it's time to glue some leaves, you can leave leaves plain as it is or let child draw some details on it using coloring markers. Let child glue the leaves on the stems using liquid glue or solid glue stick.
And there goes your "egg carton bluebell flowers". We used plastic white drinking straws since that's the only straws we have at the time Lauren made this project. Lauren painted the plastic straws with poster paint but for convenience you can use disposable paper drinking straws (solid colored ones) to skip the painting process.
