In this post, I will be sharing a "cashew" craft. This was a craft project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 3: Sound of the Week) home school curriculum for the "ew" sound as in "cashew".

I thought about doing our cashews by gluing a 2 inch foam ball into an egg carton to create the cashew apple. A 1 inch foam ball cut into a quarter is glued at the bottom as a cashew seed or nut.
READY FOR KID BEFORE STARTING ACTIVITY ALONG WITH OTHER MATERIALS
* cut egg cartons
* 1 inch foams sliced in quarters
* cut leaf patterns
DONE BY ADULT OR PARENT
* CASHEW APPLE: Depending on how many cashews your child will make (2 or 3, etc.), take some egg cartons, trim the edges of the egg cartons well. We ran out of 2 inch foam balls while making this craft so we crumpled pieces of bond papers instead into a ball with size just enough to stuff or fit in the egg cartons.
* CASHEW NUTS: Slice one piece of 1 inch foam ball into quarters, this will be enough as nuts for 4 pieces of cashew apples.
* CASHEW LEAVES: Cut leaf patterns on a green construction paper.
DONE BY CHILD
* paint cashew apple
* glue cashew pieces together.
STEPS IN DOING THIS CASHEW CRAFT
STEP #1: First, let child spread liquid glue in the middle of the egg carton(s), then let child glue a 2 inch foam ball in it to create the whole cashew apple fruit.
STEP #2: Next, let child paint the cashew apples with any color(s) of their choice aside from what is shown. The child may paint cashews with assorted colors or the same colors altogether. Then, let child paint the quarter pieces of the 1 inch foam balls with brown, black or gray paint. Set the painted pieces aside and let them dry for a couple of minutes.
STEP #3: Once, the painted pieces are dry, cut strands of brown yarn or paper twine to create a hanging stem for the cashew(s). Let child glue the string on top of the egg carton(s) using hot glue. Put hot glue on the spot and guide child to put string on it. Aside from a hanging stem, you can simply create a tiny stem by using toothpicks. Let child color the toothpicks with a brown coloring marker. Next, let child insert toothpicks on the top of the egg carton to create a stem.
STEP #4: Next, let child glue the foam ball nuts at the bottom of each cashew apple using hot glue. Put hot glue on the spot and guide child in putting foam ball on it.
STEP #5: Finally, let child glue some leaves on the yarn or toothpick stem using liquid glue. Leave the leaves as it is or let child draw details on it using a coloring marker.
And there goes your "egg carton cashew fruits", we tried hanging our cashews up in a branch of a plant to look just like real cashew fruits hanging on its tree branch. Get the kid's creating their own version of this cashew fruit craft today!
