Paper & Straw Necklace

11-19-2015 -- This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) homeschool curriculum for the "n" sound as in "necklace", she is going to make a "necklace".

I did a search for some necklace crafts for kids and found this "Necklace Craft" inspired by the book (Press Here) from buggyandbuddy.com. There are many other ways to do a necklace craft out there but I chose this one because the materials are simple and easily accessible, you only need yarn or any string, construction papers, and drinking straw to create it. It's really simple and easy for kids to do. Lauren used blue, orange, and green construction papers for the circle patterns. For the straw, she used the transparent one because that's all I can find at home when we made this craft. I let Lauren cut them into small pieces, then she painted them with nail polish to color and create some designs on it.

I took some old nail polish that I don't already use to paint the transparent straws. Lauren painted the straws with white nail polish and dot some pink and green nail polish to add a bit of design on the straws.

Lauren painted the straws ahead of time so the nail polish have more time to dry then she can proceed to the next step in stringing them into the yarns. After stringing everything, the paper necklace is DONE.

This is a very easy and quick craft for kids to do. It's also a good idea to try other shapes such as hearts, stars, or flowers or mix up assorted patterns in one necklace. Aside from straws, you may use a string of beads in the same colors or different colors altogether. Below are Lauren's completed "paper and straw necklaces". She tried the necklaces herself and they're really fun and nice to look at when worn.
