9-10-2015 -- This was an art project that Lauren did in Brightly Beaming Resources' (Step 2: Letter of the Week) home school curriculum for the "f" sound as in "fan". Lauren is going to make a paper "fan" so I searched for some paper fan craft ideas and saw this "Paper Fan" summer craft for kids from verywell.com.
Lauren made both the asian-style and simple circle fan type in 4 different designs (as you can see the finished fans above). For the paper designs, if you don't have or can't find any patterned or decorative papers around you, like the ones used in the sample above, you can search for free printable "wrapping" or "scrapbooking" paper and print them on a white board paper such as (construction, specialty, vellum board, etc.). I printed some "paper design patterns" on a bond paper since we ran out of white board paper when Lauren made this activity. I made and cut the fan pattern on these papers and Lauren stick them onto hard paper. Another idea is to use any color of board paper, trace fan patterns on it, cut and allow child to draw any patterns they want on the papers and color them with coloring pens, crayons, coloring pencils, or any coloring medium they want or you have around.
It's also a good idea to use colored jumbo craft sticks for the handles of the round fans, you don't need to put colored tapes around them, the kid can just tape or glue them immediately. I think they are also more sturdy handles whether the fan is bigger or smaller. It's also good to use colored regular craft sticks for the asian-style fans, I think it makes the fans look even more fun and colorful too.
This is definitely a nice paper fan craft for kids to make and teaches kids how to creatively make their own colorful paper hand fans. Your kids can also try other shapes they want following the circle fan type design, they can choose diamond, oval, triangle or square maybe or to make an even bigger asian style fan, you can try jumbo craft sticks for the handles.
These "Paper Fans", don't only look fun and pretty but you can definitely use them to cool yourself on a hot summer day or even during black outs. Go ahead and get kids creating some today.
